Wednesday

  • During the 6th and 7th centuries B.C.E., aristocrats ran the show in most of Greece
  • Aristocracy is when aristocrats rule
  • Rich people had much more power than anyone else 
  • Rich men would attend meetings where they would discuss politics and enjoy  performances by dancers and acrobats 
 Exclusive club:
  • Woman had no power
  • Middle class had no power
  •  Slaves had no power
  •  Even some aristocrats were excluded
Tyrants 
  • Tyrant: someone who rules outside the of the poli s
  • Modern meaning of tyrant: an oppressive ruler
  •  Greek meaning of tyrant:  someone who simply seized power 
Clash of the tyrants:
  • Hippias was tyrant who ruled for 17 years
  • His brother was murdered
  • He became a harsh ruler
  • He was ostracized 
  •  He then began working with the Persian King Darius 1.
